I am not a professional. These are just what I use to manage my anxiety.
Identify The Physical Symptoms Of Your Nerves
The first step is to identify the physical symptoms of your nerves. How do you feel when you start to feel anxious?
Do you feel a racing heart?
Are your hands shaking?
Does your mouth feel dry?
Do you feel lightheaded or dizzy?
These are all common symptoms of anxiety. Take a moment to notice how your body feels when you feel nervous. Once you know the physical symptoms, you can start to address them.
Acknowledge The Thoughts That Are Causing Your Nerves
Next, it’s essential to acknowledge the thoughts causing your nerves.
What are you worried about? What’s causing you to feel anxious? What is making you anxious or stressed out? Is it a presentation you have to give? A meeting with your boss? Taking a test?
It can be helpful to write down the thoughts that are causing your anxiety. This will help you to see them more clearly. Once you know what the thoughts are, you can start to address them.
Stay In The Moment As Much As Possible
One of the best ways to calm your nerves is to stay in the moment as much as possible. When we’re anxious or stressed, our minds are usually racing. We’re worried about the future or what might happen. By staying in the moment, we can focus on what is happening. This can help to calm our minds and ease our nerves.
Deep Breathing Exercises To Calm Your Mind And Body
Deep breathing exercises are a great way to calm your mind and body. They can be done anywhere, and they only take a few minutes.
To do a deep breathing exercise, sit or stand up straight with your shoulders relaxed. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths in and out. Focus on the sound of your breath and how it feels as you inhale and exhale. You can also count each breath if you want. This will help to focus your mind and calm your nerves.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation To Release Tension In Your Muscles
Another great way to calm your nerves is progressive muscle relaxation. This technique involves tensing and relaxing different muscles in your body. Sitting or lying down can be done, whichever is more comfortable for you.
To do progressive muscle relaxation, start by tensing all of the muscles in your face for about five seconds. Then relax them and let go of the tension. Move on to your neck and shoulders, then chest, stomach, hips, thighs, calves, and feet. Tense and relax each muscle for five seconds, then move on to the next one.
Visualization Or Mindfulness Meditation To Focus On Your Breath And Surroundings
Mindfulness meditation is a visualization meditation that focuses on your breath and surroundings. It can be done sitting or lying down.
To do mindfulness meditation, close your eyes and focus on the sound and feel of your breath. Notice how the air feels as it goes in and out of your lungs. Notice the rise and fall of your chest. Focus on the present moment and pay attention to everything around you. If thoughts come up, simply acknowledge them and let them go. Return to focusing on your breath and surroundings.
These techniques can help you stay in the moment and calm your nerves. When you can focus on your breath and surroundings, it is easier to let go of the thoughts causing your nerves. Practice these techniques regularly, and you will be better equipped to deal with stressful situations. How do you deal with your nerves? What works best for you? Have you thought about starting therapy?
